Social Networks are they the new craze in online dating and meeting new people?
Sunday, July 23rd, 2006Literally everyone I know has heard of MySpace or has a page on MySpace. Years ago we had Geocities and so forth where regular people without no internet experience can literally put up a webpage of whatever interests they had. Many people put up geocities ads about themselves and used it to introduce themselves to the world. The problem with geocities which was ahead of its time was that it lacked interactivity with other geocities web page builders and owners. Friendster seemed to be the first one to actually take this and bring it to the next level. The problem with Friendster the way I see it was that the site was just too slow to do anything. I was one of the first to use them and it was getting slower and slower by the day as more and more people joined.
Myspace, was a breath of fresh air, everything worked well and fast, and interactivity with other users was very easy. Now you see a bunch of new niche targeted Social Netowrks like linkedin.com targeting professionals and business oriented minds. We will see alot of these coming within the next few years. Let me get back on track, my topic was Social Networks and Dating and Meeting people. I think dating sites like Yahoo Personals and Match.com are the ones that are going to be threatened by the explosion of these free social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. Almost every girl that I meet at the Gym or the Club have a MySpace page, and to make it easy instead of exchanging phone numbers we just exchange MySpace Urls, its that easy. You can also search for people in your area and find people who share the same interests as yourself.
In conclusion, I think Social Networks are going to flourish and grow bigger than they are, and help people communicate and meet new people much more easier than the traditional ways!
